This is a key position within the company. The successful candidate will not simply prepare quantity takeoffs. They will become a technical resource for estimating, project management and operations teams and will help establish the company’s estimating standards, production rates, historical cost database and reinforcing-steel preconstruction process.
The ideal candidate has substantial hands-on experience in the reinforcing-steel industry, preferably with a rebar fabricator, reinforcing contractor, placer, or major concrete contractor.
The individual must be able to independently review structural drawings and specifications, perform reinforcing-steel takeoffs, develop labor and material pricing, understand detailing requirements, identify constructability issues, and provide management with a reliable estimate of the cost and risk associated with a project.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Rebar Estimating:
  • Perform complete reinforcing-steel quantity takeoffs from structural drawings and specifications.
  • Develop accurate estimates for material, fabrication, detailing, placing labor, equipment, freight and other project costs.
  • Establish labor hours and production assumptions based on project-specific conditions.
  • Analyze bar sizes, tonnage, congestion, splice requirements, couplers, dowels, embeds and other reinforcing requirements.
  • Review plans and specifications for scope gaps, discrepancies and constructability concerns.
  • Identify project risks and potential cost exposures before bid submission.
  • Prepare conceptual, preliminary and final estimates.
  • Assist management in establishing final bid strategy and selling price.
  • Solicit and evaluate material, fabrication, freight and subcontractor pricing when required.
  • Maintain organized estimate documentation and assumptions.
Rebar Detailing:
  • Review structural drawings and specifications for detailing requirements.
  • Prepare and/or review reinforcing-steel placing drawings and bar lists.
  • Coordinate reinforcing steel with structural, architectural and MEP requirements.
  • Identify conflicts, congestion and constructability issues before they reach the field.
  • Review bar sizes, bends, laps, development lengths, couplers, dowels and construction joints.
  • Coordinate RFIs related to reinforcing steel.
  • Review shop/placing drawings for accuracy and constructability.
  • Coordinate revisions and changes throughout the project.
  • Work with project management and field personnel to resolve detailing and constructability issues.
Preconstruction & Operations:
  • Participate in project turnover from estimating to project management.
  • Establish project-specific production and labor assumptions.
  • Develop historical cost information for future estimates.
  • Compare estimated versus actual production and labor performance.
  • Assist project managers with change-order pricing and cost analysis.
  • Provide technical support to field supervision when required.
  • Participate in preconstruction meetings and project strategy discussions.
Leadership / Department Development
  • Establish standardized estimating procedures
  • Develop estimating templates, checklists and production-rate databases.
  • Help select and implement estimating/detailing software.
  • Mentor junior estimators and detailers as the department grows.
  • Establish quality-control procedures for takeoffs and placing drawings.
  • Eventually assume responsibility for the company's reinforcing-steel estimating/detailing function.

IDEAL EXPERIENCE:
The strongest candidates will have:
  • 7+ years of reinforcing-steel industry experience, with preference for 10+ years.
  • Significant experience estimating reinforcing steel.
  • Significant experience detailing reinforcing steel or reviewing placing drawings.
  • Experience with large commercial, industrial, wastewater, infrastructure, heavy civil or other concrete-intensive projects.
  • Experience estimating projects involving substantial reinforcing-steel tonnage.
  • Strong structural drawing and specification reading ability.
  • Strong understanding of reinforcing-steel fabrication and field placement.
  • Working knowledge of ACI and CRSI requirements and industry practices.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, RebarCAD, aSa, Tekla, SDS/2 or comparable software is strongly preferred.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with project managers, engineers, contractors, vendors and field personnel.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

A formal college degree is not required if the candidate has substantial relevant industry experience.
